A sewing business that has been at the heart of a Nottingham community for almost three decades is preparing to 'stitch up shop' as the owners get ready for retirement.
Coles Sewing Centre, located on Lower Parliament Street, has been serving sewing enthusiasts, schools, colleges, and small businesses across the UK since 1996.
Owners Neil and Rosemary Coles are now seeking a buyer to continue the business's legacy and community spirit.
Neil Coles, proprietor, said: "After 28 wonderful years, we've decided it's time to hang up our scissors. We're looking for someone who can thread their own vision through the fabric of this business while maintaining the strong community ties we've sewn over the years."
The business offers a unique blend of retail, online sales, sewing machine servicing, and community-focused sewing classes. It has adapted to significant changes in the industry, including the rise of online sales and a recent resurgence of interest in sewing among younger generations.
Neil added: "We've seen a real shift towards sustainability, with many people now interested in upcycling and creating their own garments. It's been wonderful to be part of this journey and we hope the next owner will continue to nurture this growing trend."
Coles Sewing Centre is known for its community initiatives, including a programme making quilts for premature babies in hospitals.
He said: "One of our most rewarding projects has been supporting Project Linus UK, creating quilts for premature babies in hospitals. It's initiatives like these that really highlight the power of sewing to make a difference in people's lives.”
The owners are keen to find a buyer who will maintain this community spirit. The lease on the current premises expires in December 2024. If a buyer is not found, the shop will close, but the service department will continue to operate from a new location to honour warranties and continue repairs.

Their dedication to their craft and community has been outstanding. The new owner will be taking on a beloved local institution with a strong foundation."
Coles Sewing Centre will continue trading throughout 2024, with classes running until December. The owners assure customers that all outstanding orders will be fulfilled, and the high level of service will be maintained.
Neil added: "We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our team members, both past and present, who have been instrumental in our success, especially during the challenges posed by the pandemic. We are deeply grateful to our customers in Nottingham, across the UK, and around the world for their unwavering support over the years. It has been a fantastic journey, and we have cherished every moment."
